This place is awesome. I went to ECHS on 1/17/25 to adopt one of their kittens. When I arrived the first thing I said to my husband was “wow, this place is clean!”.

I think the people that work here have got to be the most patient people in the world… I went there to adopt a specific kitten I saw online and when I got there the temperament of said kitten was not fitting for our family (very shy, our house is loud and chaotic with 4 kids). I basically froze up and didn’t really know how to move forward in a timely manner (I’m weird lol). They were close to closing for the day and still did not rush or pressure me AT ALL. I believe the man that was helping was named Cody. Anyways, after what seemed like forever, I was comfortably able to make a decision and ended up adopting a different kitten that has been the perfect addition to our family.

I’m so thankful for ECHS and their super kind staff for helping us get our fur baby! 10/10 these people rock!

Oh and while I was there I saw multiple staff members engaging and caring for/setting up clean kennels for puppies and cats and they seemed great at what they were doing and very nice to the animals.

Adopt don’t shop and do it at ECHS!!!

I've adopted a couple pets from The Effingham County Humane Society and it's always a great experience. They really care about their fur babies and can always tell you everything you need to know about personalities, how they do with kids, etc. We're hoping to take Mr Rufus here home soon!

My boyfriend and I recently adopted two kittens in September of 2020. I put in an application on them on a Sunday, heard back from them that following Wednesday, and had them by that next Saturday. The adoption process was fast and easy and Angie was great. Our kittens were clearly well cared for while in the shelter. They have been the BEST addition to our little family.

In June of 2021, I fell in love with another cat while volunteering. His name was Adam and he had FIV. I put in an application on him and I was accepted instantly. I have never had a cat with FIV and Angie was very informative on him and wanted me to be 100% sure. He was a shelter favorite and I will be forever grateful for ECHS for giving me my 3 kitty's. I highly recommend checking out the dogs & cats here at the shelter. Your furry best friend could be waiting on you and you just don't know it yet!

Family that adopted Hunny Bunny here. Wow, what an unprofessional and unfair post. When we met Hunny Bunny last week, we were told that another family tried to adopt her but barely made it down the street before returning her due to how she acted in the car. We still took the chance and went ahead with the adoption. Where is the Facebook post bashing that family? My family was fully prepared to work with Hunny Bunny but had no idea how bad her separation anxiety was. We have previous experience adopting a dog and still have that dog to this day. This is not a case of being "lazy" or "impatient." This is a case of a dog with EXTREME separation anxiety that we are not fully equipped to handle. Hunny Bunny escaped her crate twice and damaged a door while being alone less than a couple of minutes. I never said it was "impossible" to potty train her without a crate. I said that we were unable to properly potty train her without a crate as my wife and I would not always be home all the time to watch her. It can take months to help a dog with anxiety as bad as Hunny Bunny's. We were not comfortable leaving her unattended for any period of time. Buying a sturdier crate isn't the solution here. She HATES being in a crate. Forcing her into a sturdier crate will only increase her anxiety. Hunny Bunny is an amazing dog who is great with other dogs and kids. But she is going to take A LOT of work to work through the previous traumas she has endured. We felt like we needed to return her to give her a fair shot in life and the chance to find the right person with enough time to raise her properly.

Also, when I returned Hunny Bunny, the woman who adopted her to us didn't come out to talk to me. I assume she's also the person who wrote this post. Congratulations, you have completely turned my family off from ever adopting from a shelter again. Also, it says a lot about the people commenting on this post criticizing my family without knowing the entire story or the true character of my family. I've already paid the $200 adoption fee. Maybe the Humane Society will waive the adoption fee for the next adopter, and someone on this post will step up and adopt Hunny Bunny.

My family and I volunteer here at the Humane society. We truly feel blessed that we get to share our love for animals here. They have the most clean place and loving place for all the pets there. I pray alot that the dogs and cats will find a forever home real soon. I help with the dogs the most.. Luka, Ellie, Jupiter are so so sweet. Come visit them and see how much they will melt your heart.

I had to surrender my 8 mo.old dog Bengi because I have mobility issues and my brother just had a stroke and requires alot of my attention. I wanted to say goodbye to him and wasn't allowed to. They said because he was starting to settle down and didn't want to upset him, again.. I understand sort of, but I truly loved the pup. I just wanted him to have a better life with more exercise and lots of attention. I have never surrendered an animal before and it hurts terribly. I know they will do their best to find a good match for him. I just feel like I'm getting treated like a terrible pet owner or something. This has ripped a piece of my heart out I hope no one else has to feel this way ever. When I get an animal it's a lifetime commitment and this was very very hard for me. It's heartbreaking to the animals and the owner.

Terrible service!! Elitist!! Liars!
I went in to visit Rally the other day and when discussing with the worker that we had cats, I was told it wouldn’t be a problem as long as they were kept in their own room that the dog can’t get to.
When going to visit him again with my mother and turn in an application, I was immediately turned away for having cats. I spent an hour there that day!! They couldn’t have told me that She knew I had cats and she handed me an application!
I am furious, not for being turned down, but for being lied to.
When confronted, ECHS denied me ever being there!!!
Don’t bother adopting here...

We adopted our dog from the Effingham County Humane Society and he has become a great addition to our family. The people who volunteer at the shelter are very friendly and work hard to help all the cats and dogs that need to find homes. The building is an old schoolhouse that they have transformed into a great facility. If you are looking for a pet I would highly recommend stopping by!
