Today Mike and I buried our best friend.
Buddy’s story. We met Buddy over 8 years ago at the Effingham County Animal Control, he was about 10 months old at the time. Someone had abandoned him by Lake Sara, his only bad trait was that he shedded horribly and we suppose that is why he was abandoned. At the facility there were a lot of yapping dogs and a quiet one who just wanted petted/loved. We asked to interact with the quiet one and within a few minutes both of us knew we had found our Buddy. I paid the fees because Mike doesn’t believe that you can own a dog.
The staff was professional, the place was immaculate, the transaction easy and quick. We had to make an appointment to have him neutered before we could take him and that was when we met Drs Mike and Britt Douglas, Douglas Veterinary Clinic. Through the years Drs Douglas have been outstanding in their care of Buddy. A few years ago Buddy contracted Blastomycosis. It’s a nasty, often fatal disease but with their expert care the only visible side effect was blindness. We used to joke that Buddy didn’t know that he was blind. To see him run around the property, take his daily walks with Mike through the woods, or navigating in the house you could not tell he was blind.
Buddy loved going anywhere we went. Mike made a special platform in the pickup where Buddy could lay, harnessed in and enjoy the ride. He traveled with us in the rv on long and short trips. When we traveled by plane our friends and neighbors, stayed and cared for him. His ”Uncle Perry” and Coby moved in, Lonnie, Amy & Lisa, Rick & Nancy all stepped in to help. He liked going to work with me and was so obedient we often forgot he was there. He followed Mike around the yard from the house to the barn with simple commands. He liked boating on the catamaran or the pontoon boat. A “do you want to go on the boat?” would elicit a quick trot down the hill, he was always eager to go. He knew so many commands and words, it was amazing.
This week our little friend became very sick. Drs Douglas to the rescue once again to determine that he had Addisons Disease with complications. He had been on a IV since Monday and refused food and water. Force feeding marginally worked. He was not making red blood cells and there were other complications made evident from a battery of tests and retests.
Today with his head in my lap and Mike petting him, we let him go to a final sleep.
He’s buried on the ridge in the back yard where he used to sit. From our living room we can see the dogwood tree that we planted over his grave.
We were fortunate to have had Buddy as a member of our family. He was even tempered, smart, intuitive, easily trained, always trying to please, never chewed or made a mess in the house, always walking at heel unless given permission to go ahead, and he was a handsome boy. He was Chesapeake Bay Retriever and Husky mix but most people thought he was a lab.
We loved him and miss him terribly. We know that many of our friends have experienced similar losses with your furry friends, this is a terrible place to be.

All the staff was very friendly and welcoming! I got my new kitten within 10 minutes and was sent on my way with all the necessary documents and even some treats and kitten food! Wonderful place full of great people making a difference one animal at a time!

Had a great experience here with picking up our rescue. Not only was the puppy clearly well taken care of they made the process super simple and easy. So happy to give our pup a forever home.

I was stranded enroute to arizona and the temperature dropped down to 0* and i couldn't keep both myself and my 4yo German Shepherd warm so I was forced to ask for help. The Effingham P.D. and animal control stepped up to house him and I was able to get shelter for myself. I can't thank them enough for thier aid and understanding. I was able to get money in the morning and continue south after picking up my companion Jackson from the shelter where he was kept warm and spoiled with toys and love by the staff. Thank you all so very much.

My recently rescued dog, Moose, ran away from Mt Vernon IL all the way to Effingham. As soon as they located him, they attempted to call us. When they couldn't reach us via phone, they reached out over social media. They bent over backwards to get our Moose home. Thank you so much!!!!

Animal control is for helping animals that are being abused not for taking well taken care of animals away You always say you’re full, but you’re full on well taken care of cats and dogs are full of abused animals

The service was Horrible and the receptionist couldn’t be any more rude there supposed to help dogs but she did everything she could not to help mine I would never take an animal there they are very RUDE if you need help with your dog call E.A.R.S they are as nice as can be and try to help you and your dog out as much as possible
