Excellent little (and free) museum about the 24,000 Germans and Austria-Hungarian citizens of the UK who were interred in a camp near Peel in World War 1. The well laid out museum explains why they were interned, what they did whilst they were there and what happened to them after the war ended. Although museum is free, you can give them a donation to them using a card. On site is a cafe and some toilets which were very clean. Worth a visit if in area.

We visited when the centre was closed but you can download the Knockaloe app and do a self walking tour up the driveway. There are some interesting stories and a lovely little garden at the top.
It is a part of island history that everyone should know about and understand.

We visited the centre as part of family history research into my wife’s great-grandfather who she believed was interned at Knockaloe. We booked a special visit and the reception and service we got from Rachel and Alison was excellent. Rachel had done a lot of research into my wife’s great-grandfather and was able to paint a picture of his internment, life in the camp, repatriation and some of his life after the war. We spent a thoroughly absorbing morning with her and were very grateful for the information she supplied. The centre itself has an amazing set of high quality displays that capture life in the camp as well as telling some of the stories of the internees. If anyone has any interest in WW1, military history or the internment of “aliens” a visit to Knockaloe is a must.
